This surge emphasized the need for a streamlined licensure process as healthcare systems faced pressure to deliver virtual care effectively. As of 2023, the IMLC has been enacted in 40 states, the District of Columbia, and Guam. However, participation among physicians remains low, with less than 1% using the compact due to its complex nature.<\/p>\n
The traditional process of obtaining state licenses involved significant time, paperwork, and costs, often leaving healthcare providers unable to meet patient demands. The IMLC addresses these challenges by providing a quicker pathway for physicians to obtain licenses in multiple states with a single application. Eligible physicians, defined as those holding a full, unrestricted medical license in one participating state, can access licenses in other compact members more efficiently.<\/p>\n
Despite the advantages, challenges persist regarding the IMLC\u2019s usability. The process can still be burdensome for physicians, particularly those practicing only telemedicine. Additionally, issues surrounding medical liability insurance create more barriers. Malpractice policies may not cover services across state lines for telehealth, prompting physicians to review their insurance carefully.
