However, their financial results were about the same as hospitals led by non-clinical executives. This shows that doctor leadership focuses more on quality and efficient use of resources rather than making more money.
\nAnother study by NDP Analytics found that physician-led hospitals had patient experience ratings almost seven times better than those led by others. About 41% of physician-led hospitals got the highest patient experience rating, compared to just 6% of non-physician-led ones. This shows that these hospitals do better in service quality, patient satisfaction, and access to care.<\/p>\n
Financial results do not differ much between physician-led and non-physician-led hospitals. All the studies agree that total revenue and operating margins are similar. This means hospitals led by doctors are not at a financial disadvantage. They seem to balance controlling costs and delivering good care well.
\nOne reason for this balance is the size and type of hospitals. Physician-led hospitals usually have about 60 beds and serve local community and acute care needs. They avoid the high costs and many management layers that big hospital systems have. Researcher Nam Pham says that smaller size and fewer managers help keep costs low without hurting patient care.
\nThe cost savings help Medicare and patients. The NDP Analytics report showed about 60% of physician-led hospitals had Medicare costs below the national median in 2022. These hospitals saved Medicare about $217 million a year and saved $1,100 to $3,000 per patient compared to other hospitals.
